Squirrels are terrific climbers. Where they most frequently live in trees, they also love the warm and cozy feel of your attic. They will chew into the gutter line, around a vent or make a hole in your fascia board. Sometimes a vent isn’t properly screened so it allows easy access into your home. Trapping or excluding squirrels is the only way to get them out.
Grey squirrels have two breeding periods each year, one in early spring and another in mid-summer. The babies are usually born between March and April, with a second litter arriving between July and August. These squirrel families will stay in your home for months until the babies are weaned and old enough to be on their own. Unfortunately, if repairs and clean up of their feces isn’t performed, one of the females will most likely return to have her babies in your attic again.
Once it is know that squirrels are in your attic, removal and seal up should be performed immediately. Trapping or exclusion should take place at the entry place. Trapping in the attic is usually not successful. It’s best to remove squirrels before they are able to establish their home so the female does not give birth in the attic. If a female squirrel is removed and the litter is not found, you may hear scratching in the walls once the babies realize the mother is not returning. It is important to cut the babies out of the wall or search through the insulation to remove the litter. If the baby squirrels are not removed, they will perish in the nest.
Squirrels are cute and enjoyable to watch in the wild. They can be quite entertaining as they attempt to steal food from a bird feeder and it’s amazing to watch their agility and quickness as they jump from tree to tree. But once they break into your home, the scratching in your walls/attic and the damage they cause makes the fondness of squirrels quickly go away.
